Luangprabang Public Library

We finally found a public library in Laos!

The library is children based.  They are at the end of a huge night market and put signs up asking English speakers to come by between 1 and 3 everyday to help children practice their English (done in a room of the side of the library).    The first photo is the entrance into the library, it has fiction books in Laos and English including goosebumps series (seems very popular) a series of American books of American history done like a ‘My Story’ series.  It also has nonfiction, the third photo is the next room which has tables for older/teen students to practice English, study, use the internet.  This has lots of good non-fiction and older fiction like Isaac Asimov.

This photo is to prove even Laos uses the dewey decimal system!

This library also operates the only 2 library boats in Laos, serving 75 Mekong and Nom Ou river villages.  It also gives bags of 100 books to other villages and school libraries, and even donates bicycles to enable students to study at high school as it’s over a 10km walk.  They do this through donations, so I will be bringing all the information home to you guys in NZ!
