Impressions of Vietnam

Well, first impressions were not good, but as we moved South, things got better and better.  Sadly there are no public libraries in the whole of Vietnam!  There is a National Library in Saigon, but not open for visitors.  And everyone in Vietnam speaks English which was really good!
A legend we were told was of how long our life is.  In Vietnam, Humans lived 20yrs having fun, Buffalos lived 70yrs working hard and Monkeys lived 40yrs old and grumpy.  Humans didn’t think this was enough, but they were told there was no years left.   After a while the buffalo went to the creator and said i don’t want 70yrs its too long working hard all that time, so the creator gave them 30 yrs, humans realised there was an extra 40 years, so they asked if they could have it.  After a while the monkey complained that 40 yrs was too long, so he asked for 20yrs and the humans got the other 20 years.  So that is why humans have fun for the first 20 years, then hard work for the next 40, then 20 years to be grumpy and looked after by family.
There were no squat toilets in Vietnam which was awesome!  We did have fun, but it is hard work.  Sitting in a restaurant you spent your whole time saying no thank you to hawkers.  The country has had a huge progression in the last 10 years, it will be interesting to see it in 10 more.
The landscape is beautiful, mountains, jungle, beaches and the nice people. downside is there are plenty of the opposite, rubbish everywhere and many rip of merchants. But on the plus side we can now bargain for anything we have to buy here. It will help us for the rest of the trip for sure.
